David Jonsson, an actor nominated for a Rising Star award at the BAFTAs, reflects on his theatrical roots and the value of stage experience for aspiring actors. He recalls starting his journey at the Almeida Theatre in Islington and highlights the significance of theatres like the Old Vic and Young Vic in his development. Jonsson believes that theatre plays a crucial role in honing the skills of actors, particularly in Britain, where many renowned talents have thrived on stage before shifting to screen.
Look at Daniel Craig at the Almeida. For me, it was my way in. The best actors have all come through theatre, especially if you're British.
It's just a gorgeous building in Islington, which is a lovely part of London. The walls are all brickwork and then you go up and it's this small, intimate theatre.
This is a special one for me. It's almost like it's not built for theatre because it's so big, but it's one of those cultural spots.
I love the Young and the Old Vic because they're the same but different.
