Section of 2,000-year-old Roman road discovered under Old Kent Road
Briefly

The well-preserved section of Roman Watling Street was unearthed during a project to expand Southwark's low carbon heat network, revealing important ancient infrastructure.
This discovery is the first physical proof that parts of the Roman Watling Street still survive beneath the modern Old Kent Road, changing historical perspectives.
The Roman road's construction is evidenced by distinct layers: compacted gravel, two layers of chalk, and a final layer of sand and gravel.
Dr. Chris Constable remarked on the remarkable extent of the road's survival, hoping it will provide insights into Roman urban planning and transportation.
