Safety messaging is vital for Sadiq Khan's 'swimmable rivers' plan, City Hall warned

Grace Rawnsley, director of sustainability at the Port of London Authority said: "Every year, people die by going into the water, in the tidal Thames. In 2023, I think there were 31 deaths from people going in when they shouldn't have gone in or accidents, etc."
Ms. Rawnsley emphasized the importance of messaging around river safety: "When we get headlines like 'swimmable Thames', it does mean that people think that it's safe to swim in. It's really important to have that kind of messaging about how you do that safely."
