TfL has stated that the tunnel charges, which will peak at 4 per crossing, aim to manage traffic levels and improve air quality. Without these charges, the organization argues, traffic could increase significantly, leading to congestion and delayed travel times in both the new and existing tunnels.
Liam Davis, a local resident, initiated a petition that has gathered over 37,300 signatures against the proposed charges. He argues that the increased tolls will impact the daily lives of families, individuals, and businesses who rely on the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels for transportation.
In a presentation to City Hall, Alex Wilson highlighted the historical significance of the Blackwall Tunnel having been free for over a century. He expressed concerns that the new charges represent yet another financial burden on Londoners, potentially costing them up to 8 a day for round trips in both directions.
Wilson also noted that while TfL's goal is to mitigate congestion, introducing charges may merely shift traffic to already congested routes like the Rotherhithe Tunnel, exacerbating the issue rather than solving it.
