A controversy has arisen in Lewisham Council regarding its association with the United Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), a group facing abuse allegations from former members. During a recent council meeting, independent councillor Hau-Yu Tam questioned Mayor Brenda Dacres about the council's participation in a planned interfaith walk featuring UCKG. Former survivors support an apology for their involvement, while Dacres insisted the council has no ties to UCKG despite a cabinet member’s link to the church. The Diocese of Southwark had previously expressed regret over UCKG's inclusion, raising concerns about the treatment of abuse survivors.
A survivor, who is also a Lewisham resident, welcomed the apology, saying that it validates UCKG survivors and acknowledges that they have experienced abuse.
Cllr Tam noted that the Diocese of Southwark had issued a statement in October last year saying it deeply regretted' distress caused by UCKG's involvement.
Mayor Brenda Dacres claimed the council had no relationship with the church, despite a cabinet member working at the Catford branch.
Cllr Tam, who quit Labour in July last year, said there had been ample allegations of exploitation made against UCKG, including emotional, financial and anti-LGBTQ+ abuse.
