Following Arsenal's match against Wolves, referee Michael Oliver is under investigation due to threats and abuse directed at him after he issued a red card. The decision to send off midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly, upheld by VAR Darren England, sparked significant backlash, including comments from Arsenal’s manager, Arteta, and criticism from pundits. The referees' association, PGMOL, condemned the abuse and is initiating investigations to address the situation, emphasizing their commitment to support officials amid a troubling trend of violence against referees.
We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver. No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.
Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations.
