Police dogs face axe due to Met budget cuts, admits commissioner Sir Mark Rowley
Briefly

The Metropolitan Police is considering downsizing its police dogs unit amid significant budget cuts, according to Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley. Although he emphasized that the unit wouldn't be eliminated, it is likely to face reductions to save funds as the force grapples with a projected shortfall of £450 million and the potential loss of over 2,300 officers. The unit, which employs around 230 dogs for various critical roles including public order and drug detection, plays a vital support role for frontline officers and has garnered community support.
We have to make these tough choices. We are not going to get rid of all police dogs but we might have to reduce the size of the dog section, because we've got to make these choices if you've got less money.
I'm worried about next year. I won't know the final budget position until February. I'm not going to relish any of the cuts we might need to do.
