Croydon’s Mayor Jason Perry emphasized the necessity of the proposed 4.99% tax increase, addressing the borough's historic £1.4 billion debt and ongoing financial challenges.
Cllr Perry stated that the proposed tax hike is in line with government recommendations, and that many councils face similar financial pressures, typically opting for maximum increases.
The Labour opposition leader, Stuart King, criticized the Tory administration’s financial management, highlighting a projected £35 million departmental overspend and questioning the mayor's balancing promises.
The upcoming tax increase would raise the annual bill for a band D property by around £118, reflecting the highest level of council tax in Croydon's history.
