In a bid to tackle the rampant issue of mobile phone theft in London, City of London Police have spray-painted fake blue plaques on pavements indicating where phones have been stolen. This initiative aims to shed light on the scale of mobile theft, estimated at £50 million annually, and to help recover stolen devices more effectively. The police advise Londoners to take precautions on their devices to secure personal data, as stolen phones can lead to rampant fraud, averaging £7,000 daily, fuelling organized crime.
Det Sgt Marc Cananur emphasized that "it's not just about the physical device being stolen. This is about what the criminals can get from that device afterwards."
Police highlighted that fraud from stolen devices amounts to around £7,000 daily, integrating into organized crime networks.
