Oxford Street to be partially pedestrianised for World Car Free day
"Part of Oxford Street will be pedestrianised for one day next month, as part of the annual World Car Free Day events that take place in September. In an announcement, the Mayor of London said that "'This is Oxford Street' will see part of the iconic road free of traffic from 12pm until 8pm for the first event of its kind""
"That was supported by evidence given to the GLA's Transport Committee in June 2016, when Sir Peter Rogers (Chairman, New West End Company) said "Our members are generally supportive of traffic-free days, to some extent. What they are not necessarily supportive of is traffic-free days associated with events because events bring people in but they do not necessarily add wealth to the stores.""
Part of Oxford Street will be pedestrianised for one day next month as part of World Car Free Day, with the road closed to traffic from 12pm until 8pm. Oxford Street previously closed for annual Very Important Pedestrians (VIP) days in the run-up to Christmas until retailers withdrew support in 2012. Regent Street has also hosted traffic-free events but has struggled with the crowds they attract. Evidence to the GLA's Transport Committee recorded that retailers are generally supportive of traffic-free days but oppose event-based closures that do not add wealth to stores. The forthcoming day will be event-themed with multiple zones and stalls occupying the new pedestrian space.
