Outrage as mystery vandal targets Hackney street trees in fresh wave of attacks
Briefly

Hackney's street trees are under assault due to a wave of vandalism characterized by techniques like ring-barking and snapping, primarily in Cazenove ward. Community members, particularly resident Mark Westcott, have reported an escalation of these incidents, expressing despair over the destruction of young trees. Despite being labeled a 'victimless crime,' the community feels the impact deeply. Hackney Council is collaborating with police to increase patrols and address the concerns of residents, with the aim of putting a stop to the vandalism. After engaging with local officials, Westcott has gained renewed hope for a cooperative response.
It's heartbreaking enough seeing the silver birches come to maturity, then to see them get ring-barked this attacker is going for trees that are young enough you can actually snap them.
Apparently it's a victimless crime, but the truth is that the victim is the London Borough of Hackney.
Having now met with the borough's community safety lead, Cllr Susan Fajana Thomas, Westcott said he feels more confident in the police and council's efforts.
Westcott suspects that the person or people behind the attacks have managed to elude the authorities because the relentless onslaught occurred in places without CCTV.
