All four escalators at Cutty Sark station in Greenwich are set to be urgently replaced due to consistent breakdowns over the past three years, despite £695,000 spent on repairs. With both the escalators and lift proving unreliable, commuters often have to use the stairs—approximately 121 steps. The station will likely close for around six months during the replacement process, which is expected to significantly improve reliability. Transport for London (TfL) has acknowledged the inconvenience caused and aims to communicate precise dates for work commencement soon, especially considering the upcoming London marathon.
Despite previous attempts to repair them (amounting to £695,000), all four of the escalators have been out of action since before Christmas and have regularly broken down for the past three years.
Andy Lord, TfL commissioner, said: 'I want to apologise to regular customers at Cutty Sark for the inconvenience they have had because of the shocking reliability of those escalators.
With 7.6m entries and exits each year, Cutty Sark is the third busiest station on the DLR line (after Canary Wharf and Limehouse).
Mann promised that once the escalators are replaced, it will 'absolutely transform the station'.
