Transport for London (TfL) is upgrading Lambeth Bridge to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The initiative includes replacing roundabouts with signalised crossroads, as the bridge's northern junction is identified as London's most hazardous for cyclists. In three years leading to 2021, 21 out of 23 accidents involved cyclists. Enhancements include pedestrian crossings, dedicated cycle lanes, waterproofing the bridge deck, and establishing permanent security measures. The renovations will necessitate full closures over select weekends, but walking and cycling will still be permitted during some closures.
In the three years leading up to 2021, there were 23 crashes at the junction, 21 of which involved cyclists.
To carry out these works, Lambeth Bridge will be completely shut for two weekends over the coming months.
According to TfL, the bridge's northern junction is the most dangerous in London for cyclists.
Permanent security measures will be built to protect people walking and cycling the full length of both sides of the bridge.
