The Metropolitan Police has exited special measures after significant reforms following a series of scandals, including the murder of Sarah Everard by an officer. The force, previously deemed inadequate in several areas, is now recognized for improvements in handling calls, public protection, and managing risks from sex offenders. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley highlighted the dedication of the officers in implementing over 100 recommendations aimed at restoring public confidence. London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan acknowledged the improvements but noted that further work remains necessary to ensure ongoing progress.
The progress we have made over the last two-and-a-half years would not have been possible without the unwavering passion, sense of duty, courage and hard work of our officers and staff in the face of some incredibly challenging circumstances.
This exit from the enhanced monitoring process by the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary is welcome recognition that we are on the right path to deliver on our promise to Londoners.
