The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, today announced that he, alongside the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, is providing £300,000 to homelessness charities Crisis and St Mungo's. This funding allows them to extend accommodation for people sleeping rough at one of its Christmas hotels for an extra four weeks, making a significant impact during a critical time of year.
Over the festive period, Crisis will provide accommodation to more than 570 people in London who would otherwise be sleeping rough. By offering individualized hotel rooms and dedicated support workers, the charity is witnessing a notable decrease in the number of individuals returning to homelessness.
Last year, 65 percent of the guests who utilized Crisis' hotel extension service until the end of January were not seen rough sleeping three months later, demonstrating the effectiveness of personalized support in breaking the cycle of homelessness.
Since taking office in 2016, Mayor Sadiq Khan has quadrupled funding to tackle homelessness, helping 17,600 individuals move off the streets, with a remarkable 75 percent of them remaining housed.
