A man, 45, died in South London following police intervention during reports of a child being assaulted. Upon arrival, police found him in a medical emergency and agitated, which led to his restraint. Despite paramedics’ efforts, he became seriously unwell and later died in the hospital. The police have referred the incident to a watchdog as required when a death follows police contact. The Met Commander expressed condolences to the man's family and highlighted the difficult situation law enforcement faced upon arrival.
Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died. We will ensure they are fully supported. I know the community in South Norwood will want to be reassured that the incident was handled appropriately.
In this case they were responding to an emergency call involving a child in danger and on arrival at the scene, were met with a very challenging situation.
