Major pedestrianisation scheme for Piccadilly Circus to St James's Park
Briefly

Westminster Council and the Crown Estate are proposing to transform the area between Piccadilly Circus and St James Park into a pedestrian plaza. Regent Street St James's is to be pedestrianised, while Haymarket will allow two-way traffic. Additionally, Waterloo Place is set for pedestrianisation, promoting better public space utilization. Some side streets will restrict traffic to improve outdoor spaces. Plans also include removing the central island along Regent Street to enhance walkability and cycling. Implementation and funding arrangements will be determined in 2026, maintaining necessary road access for services.
The plans would see Regent Street St James's pedestrianised, and Haymarket converted into two-way traffic, enhancing the flow for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Further south at the junction with Pall Mall, there are proposals to pedestrianise Waterloo Place, allowing greater public use of this historically significant area.
North of Piccadilly Circus, plans include removing the central island along Regent Street, leading to wider pavements which would improve pedestrian access and mobility.
Piccadilly Circus could see increased pedestrian space, primarily from the pedestrianisation efforts south of the area, benefiting both visitors and local businesses.
