"With a provisionally estimated trip-based mode share of 4.7% of all journeys in 2024, it is a smaller mode of transport in the overall London context. However, its growth trajectory, both in the longer term and more recently, since the pandemic, is unlike that of any other travel mode. In 2025, there were an estimated 1.5 million daily cycle stages in London, equivalent to the combined passenger numbers on the Northern and Piccadilly lines."
"It is estimated that around a third of all cycling in London takes place on TfL Cycleways, despite the network accounting for just 2.5% of all cyclable roads. Because it has an outsized impact on encouraging cycling, TfL is working to extend the Cycleway network, aiming to reach 40% of Londoners living within 400m of a Cycleway by 2030 - up from 29% at the moment."
Cycling in London has grown substantially, with a 43% increase in journeys since 2019 and daily cycle stages estimated at 1.5 million in 2025. The trip-based mode share was provisionally 4.7% in 2024, while long-term growth has outpaced other travel modes. Growth was strongest in inner London (14.8% year-on-year), central London (12.8%) and outer London (9.9%). Around one third of cycling occurs on TfL Cycleways despite those routes representing only 2.5% of cyclable roads. TfL aims to expand Cycleway access to 40% of Londoners within 400m by 2030. Resident participation dipped from 23% to 22%, suggesting fewer occasional cyclists but stronger regular cycling.
