On Friday morning, rail passengers experienced significant disruption due to a nationwide fault in the critical GSM-R communication system, resulting in delays and cancellations. National Rail reported that while services were affected, including those on Gatwick Express and Thameslink networks, the issue was traced to a major hub near Stoke and has since been fixed. Services are gradually returning to normal, and passengers are advised to check for updates.
National Rail confirmed earlier that the GSM-R radio system, essential for communication between train drivers and signal operators, caused delays to train services, with some leading to cancellations. Affected services included those from Gatwick Express, Great Northern, and Southern, which saw delays of up to 15 minutes or more. Southeastern and Elizabeth line trains were some of those that also experienced significant disruptions in service during this time.
