London council declares 'funding emergency' as it applies for 37million in Government bailout cash
Briefly

Haringey Council in London is grappling with a funding crisis, seeking £37million from the government to sustain its operations amidst rising service demands from a growing population and prolonged austerity measures. Council leader Peray Ahmet highlights that Haringey receives funding adequate for outer London while facing challenges typical of inner London. This mismatch has led to insufficient resources to meet the increasing needs of residents, prompting discussions for urgent financial support. Other councils like Croydon and Havering are similarly seeking emergency funds to manage escalating service costs and budget deficits.
Despite the difficult financial challenges, we have been working hard to deliver a balanced budget for 2025/26, and we are wholly committed to protecting and delivering services which matter most to residents.
We are a borough with outer London levels of funding but inner London levels of need. Recently, we have less money to serve more people.
