It was was extinguished by 3.10am. LFB said: If you're a smoker, it's absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you've finished smoking it."

Around 36 people left before crews arrived. Two people were rescued from the fourth floor with escape hoods and two more were brought down by a turntable ladder. The London Fire Brigade issued safety advice including using sturdy ashtrays, stubbing cigarettes out completely, wetting discarded butts, and taking extra care when tired, medicated or after drinking. A separate flat fire last month also followed unsafe cigarette disposal and caused multiple evacuations.
