Independent cinema founder honoured with plaque
"Clara was a visionary businesswoman and pioneer of early British cinema. I wish she could have known that her legacy would be The Rio, still programming for everyone in the borough."
"The unveiling of Clara Ludski's plaque is a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman who helped shape Hackney's cultural life, restoring her rightful place in history."
Clara Ludski, who passed away in 1933, transformed her family's auctioneer shop into one of London's first cinemas in 1909. The venue, now known as The Rio, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. A plaque commemorating Ludski was unveiled by her great-granddaughter during the celebrations. Ludski expanded her cinema to nearly 1,000 seats by 1915, showcasing her impact on the film industry. The plaque installation was part of the Hackney Society's Women of Hackney project, honoring her contributions to the cultural landscape of Hackney.
