Police quickly named Kyle Clifford, a 26-year-old man from Enfield, as a main suspect, and said they were searching for him in Hertfordshire and north London.
As armed police searched the area around Hilly Fields, schools across Enfield went into lockdown. Headteacher of St Michael's Primary School confirmed that children were being kept inside as a precautionary measure.
Bright Horizons confirmed lockdown in two nurseries. Police also searched a home in Rendlesham Road, near Gordon Hill station, where armed police were visible.
