Since April 2019, the Thames bridge connecting Hammersmith and Barnes has been closed to vehicles, with full reopening unlikely before 2035. While remaining open for pedestrians and cyclists, recent closures have resulted in severe crowding and long wait times, causing locals to voice their frustrations. A leak in a Cadent Gas pipe led to the closure of one footpath, exacerbating the situation. The local council has invested approximately £45 million in bridge restoration, but the ongoing issues highlight the impact on the community.
Kieren McCarthy, a local journalist, reported frustrating pedestrian traffic jams at Hammersmith Bridge, noting, 'We've reached the point where we now have pedestrian traffic jams to go with the car traffic jams in Putney.'
A furious local remarked on the conditions, stating, 'There was two-way pedestrian traffic on a super-narrow path at peak rush hour and people waiting half an hour to cross in dangerous conditions.'
