Hackney groups bid to take over former school
Briefly

In Hackney, local charities and organizations have formed a consortium to bid for the Colvestone Primary School building, designated an asset of community value by the council. The aim is to transform the defunct school into a creative and cultural hub, thereby preventing its decline. The school was closed due to decreasing pupil numbers and additional closures are anticipated. The consortium, including various arts and music organizations, argues that early repurposing could ease future costs. Community benefits from using the site for arts and education could mitigate the loss of schools in an increasingly unaffordable London.
"Schools are closing as a result of London becoming unaffordable for young families, and councils are being starved of government funds," said Bill Parry-Davies.
The consortium argues 'early reoccupation' would prevent the building from deteriorating and bring down costs for the council.
Viable alternative uses that confer community benefits, like the Colvestone School bid, are possible and preserve the rich architectural, educational and social heritage.
A consortium of local residents and groups announced their proposal last month to save the east London building by repurposing it as a creative and cultural hub.
