Sir Mark Rowley noted that abuse on social media and political attacks have eroded police officers' confidence, leading to a notable decline in stop and search rates and arrests.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner criticized the online abuse officers face, emphasizing, "We police without fear or favour, and for everyone. It does no-one any favours for this to be deliberately undermined to drive clicks on social media."
Sir Mark Rowley warned that when accusations are thrown at the police, it emboldens criminals and puts officers at risk, saying, "I say to all those throwing insults: be very careful which side of the line you are standing."
Rowley highlighted a troubling trend: a third of police officers reported giving up their public order and Taser accreditations due to diminished confidence, showing a significant impact on their operational readiness.
