Greenwich pub wins fight to keep riverside seating
""We are thrilled, our staff are thrilled, our customers are thrilled.""
""We now don't have to lose staff, and we can now invest in outside and make it better,""
""This is a positive outcome as it means there will be restrictions in place to safeguard the path from unnecessary clutter, making sure it is safe to use,""
The Trafalgar Tavern, a nearly 200-year-old riverside pub in Greenwich, successfully appealed a council order to remove most outdoor seating from the Thames Path. Greenwich Council had called the tables "visual clutter" and issued an enforcement notice that was quashed by the Planning Inspectorate. The Planning Inspectorate granted permission for part of the Thames Path known as "The Knuckle" to be used for external drinking and dining. The pub’s landlord said the appeal was costly and that keeping the seating prevents job losses and allows investment. The council requires detailed, approved plans and said restrictions will safeguard the path and users' safety.
