Whippendell Wood, an ancient woodland near London, will allow mountain biking through sustainably developed trails. Previously, unauthorized bike trails were removed to prevent soil erosion. The council aims to balance recreation and conservation to protect this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Construction for the new trails is set to begin soon, with an opening expected this summer. Funding comes from the Community Infrastructure Levy-backed Watford Neighbourhood Grant and support from West Herts Golf Club, which returned a section of land for the project. Bike Park Chilterns CIC will manage the trails.
Whippendell Wood, a short cycle ride from Watford Junction station, is an ancient woodland that's been forested for at least 400 years. It also doubled as the forest planet Naboo for the 1999 Star Wars prequel, The Phantom Menace.
The bike trails will return now, as the council has found a sustainable area for mountain biking while preserving the natural habitat. They say that the bike trail aims to balance recreation with conservation.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, with the trail set to open later this summer.
Creating the new bike trails has been partially funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)-backed Watford Neighbourhood Grant, with additional support from West Herts Golf Club.
