Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that Northern line trains will resume serving the station on December 23, after extensive work replacing escalators. The station has been closed since June 26 last year for the escalator work, and the prior escalators were described as "among the most unreliable" on the network. The new escalators, the same model used on the Elizabeth line, are expected to last for an impressive 40 years.
The reopening will last for less than 48 hours before the station closes again for Christmas Day. After which services will resume again on Boxing Day. While the work on the escalators was taking place, TfL took the opportunity to make wider repairs, including to the ticket hall floor and the ceiling. These additional repairs delayed the reopening, which was initially set for the summer of 2024.
In addition to installing new escalators, TfL preserved the original clocks outside the station and on the platforms, maintaining the aesthetics of a station that has been operational since 1907. Furthermore, seven new ticket gates have been installed to provide more space, aligning with the modernized look that includes new LED lighting while retaining much of the original tiling.
Customers should prepare for some hoarding still being in place by December 23, as the work on ticket machine installations is ongoing. As a result, those needing to top up their Oyster cards or purchase tickets must do so before arriving at the station, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead in light of renovations.
