'Firework killed my family and destroyed my life', says London father
"In the afternoon we prayed at home together, then we went to the gurdwara in Southall and visited with some family nearby. We all had dinner together and put the children to bed ready for school the next day. Shortly after that, I saw the fire. I tried to go upstairs to help my family, but I lost consciousness. I don't know what happened after that. When I woke up, the whole house was on fire."
"A coroner ruled in the inquest into their deaths earlier this year that the six people died in a tragic accident, having been very quickly overwhelmed by smoke fumes, LFB said. The inquest heard that Mr Kishen was heroic, LFB said, when he attempted to tackle the fire and sustained burns before he lost consciousness. When he regained consciousness, the fire had spread."
Aroen Kishen's wife Seema and their children Riyan (11), Arohi (8), and Shanaya (4), plus family friends Nitin and Sandhaya Chopra, died in a house fire in Hounslow on November 12, 2023. London Fire Brigade believes the most probable cause was a firework igniting combustible recycling waste in a plastic bin next to the house, though the origin of the firework is unknown. A coroner ruled the six deaths a tragic accident after victims were quickly overwhelmed by smoke fumes. Kishen attempted to tackle the blaze, sustained burns, lost consciousness, and later awoke to find the house ablaze. Fire crews reached the first floor but retreated due to the severity of the fire, and Kishen said the night destroyed his life and warned that fireworks can cause catastrophic loss.
