Fire near Glasgow Central station causes major rail disruption
"More than 60 firefighters are currently working to tackle a large building fire on Union Street, Glasgow. We were alerted at 3.46pm on Sunday, 8 March, to reports of a fire affecting the ground floor of a four-storey commercial building. At its height, 12 fire appliances and three high-reach vehicles were mobilised to the area, where firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire."
"Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained. The corner of the Forsyth Building, as well as the Caledonian Chambers and Central Hotel, seem unaffected. It's a massive blow to Union Street with the restoration of the Egyptian Halls in prospect."
A significant fire broke out near Glasgow Central station on Union Street on Sunday afternoon, forcing the closure of Scotland's busiest railway station. Over 60 firefighters responded to the blaze, which affected a four-storey commercial building dating back to 1851. The fire caused a partial building collapse and resulted in the cancellation of dozens of trains. No trains operated to or from the high-level platforms, and services through low-level platforms did not stop at Glasgow Central. The station remained closed until further notice as crews continued firefighting efforts. No casualties were reported. Alternative travel arrangements were offered, with ticket acceptance on other rail services.
