Catherine West revealed to parliament that in 2023, nine serious offences involving individuals with diplomatic immunity were reported, including sexual assault and child-related crimes.
West stated that while the vast majority of diplomats follow UK law, the Foreign Office is committed to addressing any allegations of illegal activity by diplomats.
Serious crimes, defined by the Foreign Office, include offences that could lead to imprisonment for over a year and severe driving offences.
In cases where serious crimes are involved, the Foreign Office may request that the diplomat's home country waives immunity for legal proceedings.
