Motor vehicle thefts in Barking and Dagenham have risen by 22% this financial year, with 247 incidents reported compared to 203 last year. The increase is primarily due to bike thefts, particularly targeting Deliveroo and Uber drivers in the Heath and Whalebone areas during midweek nights. Recent weeks saw 110 thefts in the last four weeks, slightly up from 107 previously. Police have implemented measures, including vehicle seizures and arrests, but acknowledged significant intelligence gaps regarding suspects. Additional funding has been allocated to enhance resources for tackling vehicle thefts.
Ch Insp Mo Mahmood stated that motor vehicle thefts in Barking and Dagenham had increased by almost 22% compared to last year, with a focus on bike thefts.
