Transport for London (TfL) is taking action to help Croydon Council replace more than 100 bus shelters that were previously removed due to a failed contract with a private company. Croydon had signed a deal with VALO Smart City to upgrade bus shelters, but the company did not deliver on its promises. After terminating the agreement, TfL stepped in to install new shelters, which will cover basic functionalities but will not have smart features. The contract also includes maintenance by TfL.
Carl Eddleston, TfL's Director of Network Management and Resilience, stated, "These new bus shelters will provide much needed travel infrastructure to the residents of Croydon and we're delighted to be installing these new shelters."
The previous contract with VALO Smart City was terminated in 2023 when the private company failed to fulfill their commitments, leading Croydon Council to pursue compensation.
