Cat-callers and street harassers in east London will face fines of up to £1,000 under a new scheme designed by the council to ensure women's safety. The initiative follows alarming statistics showing that 15% of women had experienced verbal abuse in the area, and 10% reported incidents of cat-calling. The PSPO aims to address sexual harassment among other antisocial behaviors, highlighting the community's need for enhanced safety measures.
Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, emphasized the significance of the Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) in reducing antisocial behavior. He stated, 'PSPOs play a huge role in reducing ASB in our hotspot areas and as part of the renewal, we know how important it was to include sexual harassment to help improve women's safety.'
