Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed concern that changes to council tax benefit will significantly harm poorer Londoners, urging the Government to reassess funding and rules for fairness.
Mayoral documents indicate that vulnerable groups, including lone parents, carers, and disabled individuals, may face new council tax payments, potentially up to 3,000 a year even if they are on benefits.
The recent draft budget suggests that working age households on low incomes could see their council tax contribution rise sharply, even if they were previously exempt.
Currently, the poorest pensioners and students receive full council tax support, while working age individuals, especially those on benefits, depend on borough schemes that are becoming less generous.
