Back to school help for hospital staff in Romford and Ilford
Briefly

The concept behind the market places was initiated by Charleen Elton, the staff manager, in response to the cost of living crisis impacting NHS workers, aiming to provide them support during challenging economic times. Charleen explained, "I wanted to create something where staff could pick up items during their shifts." This initiative has significantly alleviated some financial burdens for numerous hospital staff members, reflective of the community spirit within the hospitals.
Nurse Matilda Beattie highlighted the challenge many parents face, especially those with multiple children, saying, "This time of year is very expensive with five children of school age. I've been working here 10 years and this is the first time I’ve come to one of these events and I’m glad I did." Her sentiments capture the financial strain many hospital workers endure.
Naima Mohammed, a healthcare assistant benefiting from the program, expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating, "Things are tight with the economy right now, so this really helps." Her experience demonstrates the immediate, positive impact such community-driven programs have on staff incomes and morale at NHS hospitals.
The project, which began in 2022, has been well-received, helping around 1,500 hospital workers so far across ten market places. Partnering with Smiles London and Essex charity has allowed for a diverse range of support, with only a minimal cost of £3 to contribute to the charity. This collaborative effort illustrates a strong commitment to nurturing healthcare staff during difficult economic periods.
