Authority to raise council tax by almost NINE per cent
Briefly

Newham Council has received permission to raise council tax by 8.99% due to significant financial pressures primarily from costs related to temporary accommodation for over 6,500 residents. Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz emphasized that the decision was not made lightly, highlighting the council’s efforts to maintain a council tax reduction scheme for low-income and pensioner households. Despite the increase, the borough will maintain one of the lowest council tax rates in London, indicating a commitment to supporting vulnerable residents amid a forecasted £157 million budget deficit by 2027/28.
We will continue to support those most in need through our proposed 80 per cent council tax reduction scheme.
If it wasn't for the severe cost pressures of temporary accommodation and growing demand in social care, we would have set a balanced budget this year and next.
