An archaeological project on the Isles of Scilly has mapped 90 pilot gig sheds, indicating their historical significance in transport and rescue operations. These fast, lightweight boats, propelled by six oars, have played a crucial role for islanders by aiding in navigation, building maintenance, and cargo rescue since the 17th century. Project lead Cathy Parkes expressed surprise at the number of discovered sites, which provides valuable insight into the maritime history of the area. The findings coincide with the annual World Pilot Gig championships, underscoring the cultural legacy of these vessels amidst climate concerns.
