Liverpool's victory against Girona in the Champions League was due in part to a contentious penalty, which former player Steve McManaman deemed 'harsh' and undeserved.
McManaman argued that the foul committed by Donny van de Beek on Luis Diaz was minimal, comparing it to the contact seen during set-pieces that often doesn’t get penalized.
He stated, "You expect the midfielders to go to close down and if you stand on an inch of his heel, it is very unfortunate... I don't think it was a penalty regardless of the result."
The situation led to significant debate, as McManaman expressed that Liverpool were fortunate to receive the penalty decision which ultimately determined the outcome of the match.
