"Swansea have been looking for a player to provide competition for Josh Key, having used Ethan Galbraith who is most at home in central midfield on the right flank of their defence on a number of occasions in recent weeks. Ward will also offer Vitor Matos an option in the heart of defence, where Kaelan Casey has been back-up to Ben Cabango and Cameron Burgess this season with summer signing Ricardo Santos featuring only once as a substitute."
"Ward described the cup triumph as a "fairytale ending" to his Palace playing career. "It has been an incredible journey with so many fond memories, so many incredible moments moments that will live on in my mind for the rest of my life," he said in a statement last May. "This isn't 'goodbye' it's merely a 'see you later'.""
Swansea City are close to signing veteran defender Joel Ward on a contract until the end of the season. The 36-year-old can play at right-back or in central defence and will provide competition for Josh Key and an option alongside Vitor Matos. Swansea have sometimes used Ethan Galbraith on the right flank and have relied on Ben Cabango and Cameron Burgess with Kaelan Casey as back-up; Ricardo Santos has made only one substitute appearance. Ward spent 13 seasons at Crystal Palace, making 364 appearances and scoring six goals, helped Palace win promotion in 2012-13 and finished his time with an FA Cup triumph. Ward previously played 96 senior games for Portsmouth and had a loan spell at Bournemouth.
