Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes had agreed to sell the England star for 45m with negotiations advanced for a swap deal with Newcastle involving Anthony Gordon going the other way for 75m.
Gomez will consider his Liverpool future upon his return, and while the Reds aren't pushing him out, they are interested in Gordon, whose future with Newcastle seems uncertain.
