Labour MP Luke Charters has proposed trials to evaluate the impact of lifting the alcohol ban in football stands, a regulation in place since 1985 aimed at combating hooliganism. Charters argues that this outdated ban does not apply to other sports, where fans can drink freely. He highlighted a successful trial in the women's game and suggested exploring similar initiatives in the men's game. In addition, Charters stressed the importance of addressing high ticket prices faced by football fans, advocating for capping away ticket prices to improve accessibility.
During the debate, Charters emphasized that it has been 40 years since alcohol was banned in view of the pitch. He stated, "Perhaps it is time for a modern approach to a modern game. The days of hooliganism are gone."
Charters acknowledged that while lifting the ban might not work in every instance, he insisted there should be discussions about allowing fans to responsibly drink in the stands, highlighting a need for limited trials of drinking zones.
