'Hard day for us' - Portugal's tribute to Jota at Euro 2025
Briefly

The Portugal football team mourned the loss of Diogo Jota and his brother, who died in a car crash. During their Euro 2025 opener against Spain, fans displayed tributes, and a moment of silence was observed before the match. Coach Francisco Neto described Jota as a devoted supporter of the women's team. Players donned black armbands, and despite overwhelming fan support, Portugal lost the match 5-0. The event highlighted the deep emotional impact of loss on players and fans, acknowledging that life surpasses the importance of football.
Portugal’s national anthem was followed by an impeccably observed minute's silence before kick-off, during which a black-and-white image of Jota was displayed on the big stadium screens in Bern.
Diogo followed our team because he loved the county. He always knew the result and followed the team, some players and this is the culture we have in Portugal.
