Five things we know as Wicklow put 2025 nemesis Limerick to the sword
Twelve of the 16 teams remain in the Tailteann Cup. Limerick, Clare, Carlow, and Waterford are eliminated after losing their first two matches. Laois, Offaly, Fermanagh, and Antrim have won both matches and are already in the last eight. The remaining eight counties, including Wicklow, have one win and one loss and must play off for the final four quarter-final places. Wicklow’s win over Limerick provides a boost, though Limerick’s poor season form is evident, including relegation to Division Four and losses in both Tailteann Cup fixtures. Limerick led early with three two-pointers and two goals, but they went 21 minutes without scoring in the second half. Wicklow benefited from Malachy Stone playing the full 70 minutes and from encouraging late play, including a roaming run for a final goal.
"But at the other end of the scale, Wicklow seem to be better stocked than they have in recent weeks? That is also true. The excellent Malachy Stone has had an injury-plagued season so it was great to see him play the full 70 minutes, and while he did, understandably, take some time to get to the exact pitch of the game, his roaming all the way up the field for Wicklow's late final goal was a very encouraging sight."
