The article discusses the dynamics of user migration between far-left subreddits, particularly focusing on the tankies community. Using migration metrics, it highlights how tankies predominantly attracted users from other left-leaning subreddits, especially during its early months in mid-2019. The analysis captures changes in user behavior over two distinct periods, noting a significant decrease in migration from similar communities after tankies became more popular. The implications of these migration patterns on community growth, user interactions, and overall online discourse around leftist ideology are also examined.
In analyzing user migrations into tankies, we found that during the first month after r/GenZedong's founding in July 2019, 58.4% of tankies' user-base came from other far-left communities, highlighting significant movement within ideological subreddits.
