The Haitian Question
Briefly

The history of Haitian immigration to the United States has seen politicians on both sides and systemic cruelty working to keep Haitians from entering the country.
Children in the author's school learned from adults that Haiti was the origin of H.I.V./AIDS, leading to stigmatization and harassment of the author's family.
When stereotypes surrounding Haitian culture prevailed, small efforts in education, like the author's mother bringing the globe to class, temporarily helped change perceptions.
Despite moments of cultural awareness, the lasting narrative in society often documented misinformation and prejudice, impacting the way Haitian Americans were viewed.
