The Biden administration allocated $1.7 billion to convert endangered or shuttered plants into electric vehicle manufacturing facilities. Eleven auto factories across eight states will receive funding for EV retrofitting.
"Building a clean energy economy can and should be a win-win for union autoworkers and automakers," said President Joe Biden. The funding aims to create good-paying union jobs and support auto companies in retooling existing facilities.
The $1.7 billion investment is part of a $15.5 billion program to retrofit manufacturing facilities for EV production. This initiative is under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, focused on climate legislation.
