Nancy Pelosi visits Bronx for Women's History Month chat, hosted by Ritchie Torres | amNewYork
"Pelosi outlined her groundbreaking journey from housewife to House Speaker a powerful position second in line of succession to the president. She is now retiring from Congress after nearly 40 years representing San Francisco."
"I think to be a woman elected official it's really not easy, Menin said. People pick apart what you wear, what your hair looks like, what shoes you're wearing, what you're saying. It is just an absolutely unbelievable double standard."
"Many of the city and borough's prominent women leaders turned out for the event, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, the first Black woman to serve in the role and City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the first Jewish speaker."
Rep. Ritchie Torres organized a Women's History Month fireside chat at the New York Botanical Garden featuring House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and other honorees. Pelosi shared her journey from housewife to House Speaker, the second-highest position in presidential succession, after nearly 40 years representing San Francisco. The event highlighted prominent women leaders including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, the first Black woman in her role, and City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the first Jewish speaker. Three Bronx natives breaking barriers were also honored: Miguelina Camilo, the first woman and Latina City Council Chief of Staff; Simone A. Jones, City Council Deputy Chief of Staff; and Randi Martos, Assembly Member chief of staff. Menin emphasized the double standards women elected officials face regarding appearance and scrutiny.
