Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticized Kent Police for arresting Julian Foulkes, a 72-year-old pensioner, for a tweet deemed a 'thought crime' regarding antisemitism. Foulkes, a former special constable, experienced a heavy-handed police approach, including a warrant search and eight-hour detention. After 18 months, the police acknowledged their misstep and apologized. Braverman condemned this incident as symptomatic of 'woke policing' that undermines free speech, suggesting that police are excessively politicized and pursuing unwarranted cases under the directive of their leaders.
The police seriously erred in this instance, and I think it's caused a national embarrassment because their overreach, their overzealous approach, is a symptom of a deeper problem within policing, which is political correctness.
I do think that the police have still got a major problem when it comes to being overly politicised, and chief constables are directing their rank and file officers to pursue cases which are totally unmerited and shouldn't warrant police action.
